Tinnitus management options

There is no single approach that works for everyone, but several strategies can reduce the impact tinnitus has on daily life.

Start with the cause when possible

If tinnitus is linked to an identifiable problem such as earwax or a jaw issue, treating that problem may help. Hearing assessment can also uncover hearing loss.

Sound-based approaches

Sound generators, environmental sound and hearing aids can make tinnitus less prominent for some people. Learn about sound therapy.

Behavioral approaches

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) does not claim to erase the sound; its goal is to reduce distress and improve coping. Education and counseling can also help.

Hearing aids

For people who also have hearing loss, hearing aids are a common management option because amplification can improve access to external sound and may make tinnitus less noticeable.

What about supplements?

Supplements are widely marketed, but NIDCD says dietary supplements promoted as tinnitus cures have not been proven effective. Read our supplement evidence guide.
