Pulsatile tinnitus

Pulsatile tinnitus is a rhythmic sound, often synchronized with the heartbeat. It differs from the more common continuous ringing or buzzing pattern.

Why it is different

Pulsatile tinnitus can be associated with blood-flow or structural causes. Because some causes are identifiable and treatable, medical evaluation is important.

What evaluation may involve

A clinician may take a detailed history, examine the ears and head and neck, assess hearing, and decide whether imaging is appropriate.

Do not self-diagnose the cause

The sound pattern alone cannot establish the cause. If your tinnitus follows your pulse, arrange medical evaluation.
